Time outside the city: on the snow, on the water and out on the fjord.
Dog sledding
Husky teams run from camps in the hills around Tromsø. Drive your own team, or ride along on the sled while a musher handles the dogs.
Most trips collect you from the city centre and last half a day. Warm overalls are usually provided.

Whale watching
Each winter, orcas and humpbacks follow the herring into the fjords just outside Tromsø, and boats go out most days while the season holds.
The season is roughly November to January. Trips last several hours and the sea can be cold and rough.
Fjord cruises
Boats leave the harbour for Ersfjord, Sommarøy and the open fjord — some with seafood served on board.
From a few hours to a full day. It is colder on the water than in town, so bring layers.

Sámi culture and reindeer
Visits to a Sámi camp outside the city include reindeer, lavvu tents and stories about Sámi life in northern Norway.
Arranged year-round, usually an hour or so from Tromsø. Book ahead — groups are small.
